One of the most difficult aspects of being DOLLS editor is cutting submissions. As I wade through entries, most pieces compel me in some way or other, and so selection often comes down to how new a piece is, how good the composition and lighting of a photo is and how a piece will play into and balance out the editorial mix for a given issue or story. But every time there’s a multitude of entries for an open submission, the process is painstaking. I deliberate and reason out why a piece should or shouldn’t go in the issue, oftentimes revisiting a picture several times before deciding either way. And amidst all the angst about what should or shouldn’t make the cut, one thing is certain: The process is difficult, and I appreciate each and every work an artist has submitted for evaluation.
